A Divine Comedy: What the Hell
When Hell becomes a boring, crumbling wasteland, monsters head to Earth. The remaining few hang on, like Charlotte. A tryst with her minotaur paramour, Asterion, leads to an egg and a seemingly awkward situation that sets Charlotte on a new path.
Director's Statement
As we face our 6th mass extinction event I think about how the death of our civilizations would bring about the death of our mythologies. And with that, the seed of this loose satirical retelling of Dante's Inferno was planted firmly in my brain.
I took two monsters featured in the poem, and expanded on the melodrama of their lives while their world around them crumbles into oblivion. I feel like an apocolypitic anit-romance perfect for the end-times.
I made this film over a 4 year period at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB/ONF). There, I cowrote with author Sean Micheals, and designed, animated, directed, and voice acted in this short.
The Letterboxed curators listed What the Hell as "Best of Fantasia Film Festival 2024". It is currently on the festival circuit.
