Girl in the Hallway
Why does 'Little Red Riding hood' give Jamie nightmares? It's been 15 years, and the girl in the hallway haunts him still. This is a testament to locked doors. A lullaby sung by wolves with duct tape and polaroids. Not all girls make it out of the forest. Some stories children shouldn't hear.
Director's Statement
I came across Jamie DeWolf's poetry on youtube and became obsessed with this story. The problem was I didn't know how to make a movie at the time, and started a 5 year process where I taught myself how to animate while making this film.
2D stop motion is an unforgiving process. And I had to destroy each frame before continuing on with the next frame. I animated this in one 10 minuet take, straight ahead (so frames made in sequential order) in DragonFrame using charcoal, conté, graphite, and pastel.
This film went onto screen at 117 festivals internationally, winning 27 awards, qualifying for the oscars in both short animation and short documentary categories in 2019. Girl in the Hallway was Vimeo staffpick nom best of the year for documentary.
This story is important because murdered and missing indigenous women and girls (MMIW) is an epidemic level. Murder, is the third leading cause of death for Indigenous women in North America and these crimes go unsolved for decades. There is violence in silence. And the inaction of law enforcement in solving these crimes is part of the systemic violence with this ongoing genocide in the Americas.
